UC6.22 - PARTY REPORT
~ by mados/TAP

THURSDAY [14:30]
Rule name: The sixth "Underground Conference" didn't have a year-number in it's name like most other parties. It's simply called uc6.22. Why? Take a look at some older party names: The fifth one was called UC 5.25" (the floppy disk size), the fourth UC4GW (dedicated to the DOS4GW DOS extender), the third UC 3D. See?

THURSDAY [14:45]
Rule tickets: This will be my first Underground Conference. I heard a lot of stories about the UC series and I'm very curious about it. Fortunately I got an invitation. Yes, you need an official invitation to gain access to the party place. This is only the first of the special specialities about this special party. So let's go.

THURSDAY [15:30]
Rule packing: A VW Passat seems to have a lot of room. Does he have enough room for four people and two big computers, a box of Coca Cola and a huge collection of records too? Yes, he has - but now nobody can see trough the backwindow anymore. Who cares. Keep on drivin', there are about two hundred kilometers in front of us.

THURSDAY [22:00]
Rule wayfinding: Our way to Frankfurt/Main and Bingen was long - about 500 kilometers - but easy to find. We arrived in Bingen-Dromersheim. Nobody there? Fortunately we had a printed map, so we tried to use it to find the army depot. We found some very, very small lanes through dark vineyards and woods. "This can't be the right way", we thought. Let's turn around.

THURSDAY [22:15]
Rule signs: "There will be some signs besides the route", Scamp said. And yes, we found them (the first one was located at the gate to the army depot) after we turned around some times, tried several different lanes and got more and more confused.

THURSDAY [22:30]
Rule location: "Bundeswehrdepot Bingen", that's an unused army depot deep in the forest. A lot of space and nobody who cares about the noizes. The party place itself is located inside an old storage depot. (Oh no, I think it's made of asbestos.)

THURSDAY [23:30]
Rule rulecards: Scamp made an impressive cashless payment system several years ago. Everybody gets a blank white chip card. Unfortunately it didn't work. Scamp wrecked the software, I think. Now he's calling the manufacturers support hotline for an update. Several hours later it worked. Now there is a bunch of people who wants to charge there "rule cards". Besides that, everybody has to pay the entrance fee. Better late than never? ;-)

THURSDAY [23:45]
The foodsupport rules. Can't talk, mouth full, ...

FRIDAY [01:15]
Rule DOS: I asked Crest which demos would be nice to run on my tiny 66 MHz PC. He suggested "Contrast" (from Oxygene), "Eden" (from Bomb), "State of Hate" (from Dubius) and several other demos released in 1997 or earlier. Unfortunately most of them didn't run. They didn't like my weird Compaq onboard graphics card. I think I have to look for an ET4000, or something like that, next week.

FRIDAY [02:30]
Rule Lehrfilm: "Gabelstaplerfahrer Klaus". Some people are watching this kind of instructional film. Oh no, don't watch this at home, people. It's a horrible splatter movie but fun anyway.

FRIDAY [04:15]
Unrule temperature: It's fucking cold now. I want to sleep, but the so called sleeping hall (?) is overcrowded. I'll try again as soon as some of the sleepers waking up. A warm, clean linoleum floor - a real scener doesn't need more.

FRIDAY [11:30]
Rule awake: It's time to wake up. As at most parties, it's simply to hot in my sleeping bag now. Nobody can stay there so most people around are awake. Looking for some shower? Nothing there.

FRIDAY [11:45]
Unrule bathing: Damn, I forgot something. My one and only chance to get a shower is gone. No bathing trunks means no bathing. Good bye, The Update and Co. Have fun!

FRIDAY [12:00]
Rule shower: Scamp is advertising the so called "Fake-Dusche", a self made shower with cold water coming from a big water tank. "This is the first time in history of UC the fake shower isn't visible to the public", Scamp says. "You have to share them with some spiders but they also need a shower." He's right. The shower is located inside a dusty administrative building. However, the pump didn't manage to pump the water trough the long tube so the shower is outside again some minutes later.

FRIDAY [12:15]
Rule groove: Scamp is playing the official uc6.22 groove song. Some mind-blowing chiptune in an endless loop. The loop is 10 seconds but Scamp listened to it 16 hours in a row. I think we are going crazy ... in two or three hours.

Take a look for Calypso.sid if you want to beat him.

FRIDAY [20:00]
Rule cracking: The crackme competition started. Our task is to disable the protection and find some registration keys for an executable - or more exactly: two executables. Scamp asked two people to create a crackme task, both did it and Scamp forgot to stop one of them. So there are two files, both with three stages to crack.

I tried it but gave up after some minutes. The Update is much more successfully. It's fun to watch him cracking this thingy using OllyDbg and recoding it in C.

FRIDAY [23:00]
A lot of things are missing here in the report. Shopping in an incredible big Globus market (thanks for the seat Topy44 and guys). Size coding compo (thanks Ctulhu for the compo and the impressive show). Crackme compo (finally The Update is the one and only who's contibuting).

SATURDAY [01:00]
The opening ceremonie was delayed more than 24 hours, but that's no problem. Some compos already started but who cares. This is a party, and parties are for fun (especialy this party ofcourse). Scamp and the crew are playing a little story about an island, the local native and a soldier, Wurst and ... the ultimate solution. I think everybody is stoned now.

SATURDAY [04:15]
Rule demoshow: Crest's demoshow ended. As each demoshow he did up to now, it contains a very nice collection of wellknown and even more unknown demos and intros. "Crystal Dreams 2", "Hell", "Daydream", "Elements", "Planet Potion" and much more. The Underground Conference related bonus to this demoshow: It was an open air show, on the grass besides a campfire.

Thanks people, thanks Crest, can't imagine the scene without you.

SATURDAY [05:00]
PAiN number 07/02 was released during the party. Unfortunately it didn't run on my Compaq fake PC. Damn. Anyway, spread the word!

SATURDAY [12:00]
The fast compo rules are released. According to them, it's doesn't matter what you are using: an Intro, graphics, video, Flash - doesn't matter. It has to be totaly confusing. Each person, animal or object used in the entry has to wear a fake "Oberlippen" beard. And you got bonus points when you are using a remix of the official uc6.22 groove song. Don't remember Calypso.sid? No problem. Groove again, Scamp!

SATURDAY [15:00]
We are still coding for the fast size compo Ctulhu did. Ryg kicks our asses with his 34 byte entry (I stoped at 38 bytes). It's very slow but it fits the rules. MuhMac did some palette faking (he is using the VGA default gray scale part of the palette) but that's still 36 bytes.

SATURDAY [16:00]
Compos delayed as usual. Anyway, everybody has a lot of fun. The music is playing (thanks to 2funky, Yoda and some other guys). The sun is shining and it's really hot so the fake shower is used even more than once.

SATURDAY [19:15]
I need some hot water for my chemical instant noodles.

I turn on the electric kettle and ... whoops! The power turned off. Sorry guys. Who plugged the kettle there?

SATURDAY [20:00]
The shit music competition is really loud and ... shitty. Impossible to explain. Most contibutions will be disqualified later because of to much rhythm. True.

SUNDAY [03:00]
The graphics competition starts, organized by Fashion. Some nice and a lot of faked images are shown. The nice one won. Special price for the most lengthy entry title: "Papa Flugwurst wurde klar, es war eine scheiss Idee mit dem LSD für sich und seinen Sohn" (anyone who wants to translate this?). [Ed: "For daddy Flyingsausage it got clear, that the thing with the LSD for him and his son was a bad idea"]

SUNDAY [03:15]
Now the 180 beats per minute "Topfschlagen" compo (pot beating, I think). Impossible to explain. SID headbanging compo is next. Impossible too. Some people are using a ladder to knock themself. Weird. Ryg is tumbling on the stage. MBB won.

SUNDAY [04:00]
MuhMac's laptop killed the beamer. No, it didn't. Why they need an external laptop to show a Flash animation? Anyway, a very, very cool animation called "Loading". All in all there where nine faaast entries. Some images, two minimal intros (16b by me and 12b by Cutulhu), some demos and the Flash described above.

Smash Designs won, "Lodaing" ranked second.

SUNDAY [04:15]
The demo competition is coming soon. Hopefully.

SUNDAY [04:45]
Maybe the demo competition will start now?

SUNDAY [05:00]
Ok, the intro compo is over. Two tiny but nice intros, one by Speckdrumm and one by Farb-Rausch ofcourse. Both are worth seeing (remember, they are only 64k or smaller).

SUNDAY [05:15]
Demo compo still delayed.

TUESDAY [16:00]
Demo compo is over. Party is over. Ofcourse something happened during Sunday but do you really want to read about it? Now we're back home.

Thanks to MuhMac, Vudu and 2funky for the lift. Thanks to Scamp, KB, Fashion and all the organizers for organizing. Thanks to all the visitors for visiting this unbelievable, undescribable party.

If you'll get an invitation - see you next year?

Remark: Most impressive party entry in my opinion was "Rundfunkgebührenaversion" by St0ff. The live video is about 70 MB but if you have a fast connection, use it!
