I'm struggling with the Bluetooth support in Ubuntu for two years now. Today I found the problem: It's basically one of the very few UX (user experience) issues in Ubuntu.

The issue I have is that my phone connects in a very weird way to my Ubuntu PC, but I can not share, send or receive files between the two. The function is either not their there or the phone simply fails with no reason given when I try to send a file to the PC.

This thread in the Ubuntu forums gave the final hint I needed: There is a package with the internal name »gnome-user-share«. This is usually pre-installed and you can find it by searching for »share« and clicking »Personal File Sharing« (Deutsch: »Persönliche Dateifreigabe«). In the lower section, enable the checkbox »Receive files in Downloads folder over Bluetooth«. That's it. You can now send files from your phone to your Ubuntu laptop.

The UX issue here is that …

  1. … this is disabled by default, and …
  2. … this is not accessible from the Bluetooth settings.
"The function is either not their"
... but ours?
